Sandy Lee is a student artist who works with different mediums. Sandy is from the
East Side of San Jose, CA from an immi-
grant Chinese family and is currently located in Downtown San Jose, CA studying
at San Jose State University (SJSU). At SJSU, she is striving for a double major of a
BA in Design Studies and a BFA in Spatial Arts, as well as a minor in Photography.
Since the start of her college career, Sandy
has learned various techniques such as
jewelry and metalworking, photography,
designing, paper art, wood-working, and
ceramics, either through her school
courses or aspiration to explore a variety
of different art forms. She also likes to challenge herself with personal projects and through school projects.
Sandy chose to name her creative studio/
brand Red Swallow because she wanted to
connect her background with what she is doing. Red Swallow is a translation of her
Chinese name, 宏燕 (Hóng Yàn), which actually means "magnificent swallow." In
Chinese, the pinyin Hóng is a homonym for the color red. Sandy believed for many years that her name meant something close to "red bird" since she was never ac-
tually taught read or write in Chinese, hence, the name of her brand. That name was given to Sandy by her late grandmo-
ther on her father's side, who was a Chinese language instructor back when
she lived in Vietnam before her family immigrated to California, USA. Red Swallow
reminds Sandy of her culture and how it influences her art and personal life.
Sandy is also an active member of the Small Metals and Jewelry Guild at SJSU and is currently the Treasurer for it. Through the guild, she participates in guild sales such as local art shows, off-campus art events, and on-campus tent sales. Sandy also accepts commission work, so feel free to send her a message through the Contact section located at the top right.
